“That’s the trouble with loving a wild thing: You’re always left watching the door.
But you also get kind of used to it.”
–East by Edith Pattou
Rose has never been ordinary. Since the day of her eventful birth, it’s been starkly clear that fate has other plans for her. Her highly superstitious mother hid the circumstances of her birth, hoping to avert the inevitable leaving of her wanderlust daughter. When an unusually large white bear shows up on a cold night, promising health and wealth for her poor family and sickly sister, Rose doesn’t hesitate to agree. She travels on the back of the massive beast to a cold and distant castle where she is joined by a mysterious stranger who appears every evening and is gone by the morning, always without speaking a word or showing his face.
Once she discovers his true identity, she must embark on a large and impossible journey to a land that is east of the sun and west of the moon to retrieve her love and discover her purpose.
This is one of the books in my “top ten books that grew my love of reading.” I love the lore that it is based on and have read several variations of it, but this one is by far my favorite. As a young teen, I adored her audacity and spunk, and the way she pushed forward into her fate without a moment’s hesitation. I’ve always wanted that bravery for my own life and attempt to channel that myself. I still read this back at least once a year, usually now in the winter.
I’d say this is a pretty good read for middle school and up, very clean, and very much along the lines of an epic.
I hope everyone had a great and safe New Year’s Eve! I spent part of it coming back from my sister’s house after celebrating my adorable nephew’s first birthday. Now that it’s January, I’m looking forward to 2018! Our family has some fun trips planned, I’m in my second semester back in college, both my kids are mobile now so it’s easier to say “Go play in your room while mama does homework!” (Yes, I’m that mom sometimes), and it’s a new chance to hit my goodreads goal! Since I didn’t quite make it last time, I’m setting it for 75 again to see how I do. I also fell off the wagon a bit with running every week and so I’m throwing myself back into that this week. I also learned that I have a stupidly crazy discounted rate at our local gym for a yearly membership because I’m a college student and so I’m signing up for that as well. That way I don’t have to freeze my tush off outside if I don’t feel like it, ha.
How about you guys? Any “resolutions” or goals for the year?
